Microsoft has shelved development of its first-party Xbox-branded handheld gaming device, shifting focus to third-party partnerships and Windows 11 optimization. The decision sidelines a project initially teased by Xbox head Phil Spencer since 2017, which had gained traction through repeated executive comments.

The Redmond-based company will instead collaborate with hardware partners, including an upcoming device codenamed "Kennan" expected this year. This strategic pivot reflects broader industry momentum behind third-party portable PCs like Asus’ offerings, while Microsoft concentrates on software enhancements for its flagship operating system.
